Merry Christmas to all!

May you all have a wonderful Christmas, and safe and happy festive season.

This year, I am lucky enough to be spending Christmas in New York, with my wonderful wife Kate, my special little son Matthew, and my twin brother David has come all the way across from Melbourne to join us.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a White Christmas that we were hoping for. That being said, the weather has been brilliant for exploring New York and its many attractions.

Stay tuned for some more updates, and photos.

Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to all.

Fog grounds London flights

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

FOG @ Tower BridgeYet again, the weather is causing chaos in London. This time, it is FOG.

Pretty much ALL domestic flights within the UK have been cancelled, and most flights to European destinations, such as Paris, have also been cancelled. BAA state that there are train services to these destinations that travellers may use as an alternative means of getting there.

What they fail to state, is that most of the trains to these destinations are already booked out. What else to do?

Hire a car? Don’t even think about it. The car hire companies have no vehicles left.

For those with a car - don’t expect a smooth getaway. There are redictions of a 7 hour “peak hour” today, starting at 14:00.

The alternative?

Find a pub, and enjoy a beer, whilst gazing out at the fog and mist passing by.

Gotta love the UK. Nowhere else do simple weather events wreak so much havoc! 3 feet of snow in Sweden - no problem. There may be 10-15min delays for flights going in or out of their airports. What on earth will the poor Swedish travellers do with themselves for that unfortunate waiting time? Laughing at the British would be a good start!

Insurance kills the Christmas Spirit!

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

Today, we headed into London city to wander around and soak up the Christmas Spirit. This was easy to do, with beautiful Christmas decorations, and lights up everywhere, especially along Regent and Oxford Streets, which is where we decided to go and look.

So, what do you do when you have a little ‘un at Christmas? You take them to go and tell Santa that they have been good! This, you can do. Have the traditional photo of your child sitting on Santa’s knee? Don’t even think about it!

I cannot believe that the scurge of Public Liability Insurance has been allowed to encroach on such harmless, traditional and joyous activities such as this. The world is going crazy!

Why can’t there be a disclaimer displayed in the queue to see Santa, informing parents of the lack of legal recourse should their child cry when sitting on the scary man with the beard’s knee?

Craziness! Craziness!

The Enigma Code remains elusive…

Monday, December 4th, 2006

“Let’s go see where they broke the Enigma Code.” “Great idea.”

Off we go, around Midday on Sunday, bound for Bletchley Park. After about an hour in the car, we decide it would be best to fill our bellies with lunch in a nice little pub - The Magpie. After one of the best pub meals we have had here in the UK, we piled back into the cars, and continued on to Bletchley Park.

We arrive at 3:40pm - the park now closes at 4:00pm, and last admissions at 2:30pm. Bugger!

It seems they had encoded the admission times with the Enigma code!

Another day, we may have some more luck trying to break it!
