I can safely recommend Garmin GPS units

Monday, February 26th, 2007

I used the new Garmin (NASDAQ:GRMN) Nuvi 610 on the weekend, for its first test: A drive from London to Gosport (near Portsmouth) on the English coast, about 90mins drive away.

The unit handled the trip perfectly, even directing me to a Petrol station along the way.

We found where we were going (Museum of Naval Firepower) by looking for the museum in the included list of attractions.

No stuffing around with a Map, and no arguments on the directions to take to get there. All I had to concentrate on was driving in foul English weather.

Turn Baby Turn!

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

No more arguments about which turn to take.

No more stress about finding where we are going.

This has all been solved by the purchase of a Garmin nüvi 660 GPS unit.

Lovely little thing. Great features. Looks good. Simple to use. And we can have an Australian voice give us the directions, otherwise we would always arrive second last if it was an English voice!

“at the end of the month”

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Straight out of the horses mouth - Australia’s Harry Kewel, following Australia’s match against Denmark in London tonight, responded to “when are you coming back Harry?” with “at the end of the month.” Which month he was referring to we are not quite sure!

Jack Frost!

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Sunday morning ride in London in early February - you would be correct in guessing that this would require cold weather riding gear.

I set out just after 7am. After sticking my head outside the door to check the weather, I decided that I had better stick another pair of socks on. I also decided that I’d be fine without a beanie.

Off I went, feeling perfectly dressed. Once I got to Richmond Park, this changed considerably!

The entirety of Richmond Park was covered in a thick frost. It was like riding through a freezer! I read when I got home that it was about -1 or -2 degs C.
My ears were the first to feel it! I’ve never felt that much pain in my ears! Shouold have worn a beanie!

Then my toes started to hurt! Even though I had two pairs of socks on, they were only cool-max socks, so not the warmest of socks. My shoes have these lovely air vents right over my toes. Freezing air was rushing directly onto my toes!

I soldiered on, for 30 miles, and headed home for a warm shower. When I got home, and took off my shoes, my toes felt like they had been smacked on the nails with a sledgehammer! Oh the pain!

So, from now on, I’ll stick some newspaper in the shoes, or get some shoe covers, and a beanie in the pocket to be safe!

All this, and no hills!
